about

This song is about the racialized experience of people of color living in white-dominated spaces. The title character, the 'Little Indian,' is my metaphor for the lone (Columbus-ed) brown person expected to speak for all non-white peoples, as this was my experience often while living in western Europe.

The title/lyrics came to me while thinking about the controversial children's book, The Indian in the Cupboard, about a toy Iroquois man and a full-size white boy. As a child, my family often spoke about having Lenape ancestry, which in turn made me identify with the toy man.
